Hawk Talks 2020: Seniors Bond and Share Passions

Recycled SpaceX rockets, dangerous definitions of success, sexism in the medical industry, expansive concepts of music, and cookies filled the BMS cafeteria.

Jake Halpern advocated for reusable rockets to help expand the space program with maximum cost efficiency and sustainability.

Mr. Lackaye’s introduction of Halpern’s talk said it all: “Mr.Britton, I’m glad you’re here because you can tell me if everything that Jake is saying is factual, considering it’s way over my head!”

In between sound bites of AI-generated songs and German sonic experiments, Jake Bancroft struck down three definitions of music.

Jake kept it casual, causing laughs all around. His passion shined through with his great transitions and amazing humor.

Ellie’s Hawk Talk on gender bias in the medical fields and clinical trials was very well informed. Most people had no idea that research and experiments are done predominantly on men.  The medical industry considers women smaller men, which is harmful to society as a whole.

Grace’s moving Hawk Talk about schools’ damaging effects on mental health left everyone inspired and ready to take action. Grace talked about the binary of success or failure that she and others at RHS experience.

In response to a suggestion that our school provide therapy dogs during exam weeks, Jake Bancroft reminded us of the importance of our feline friends.

“If we have therapy dogs, we should also have a therapy cat!” Bancroft said.

A surprise hit of the morning, John Jackson blew away the audience with a long-awaited cover of the historic song Rap God by Eminem.
