Chapter 4: Why This Matters

I am absolutely horrified by the possible tragedies that the Court’s future decisions could create and know that we can’t let this just fade away. The Court’s decision was not a matter of politics, it was simply a manner of creating fear, a thirst for arbitrary control, and cowardice. In addition to my indignation, the Court’s decision has raised many different emotions in people all across the world. People have shared their thoughts/opinions about abortion rights across the internet and they have spread like wildfire. For instance, Mohamad Safa, CEO and representative of the Patriotic Vision Organization for the United Nations, said via Twitter, “When the penalty for aborting after rape is more severe than the penalty for rape, that’s when you know it’s a war on women.” In addition, during the 2022 Glastonbury festival, singer/songwriter Olivia Rodrigo shared her disapproval with what the Court decided. She spoke, “I’m devastated, and terrified, and so many women and so many girls are going to die from this.” Equally important, an Instagram post by RVA Magazine showed a picture (taken by Kimberly Frost) of a protester holding a sign at an abortion rights protest. The sign stated, “Guns should not have more rights than women (and other uterus-holders)”, along with a sticker for the Bans Off Our Bodies campaign. By and large, the decision to overturn Roe v. Wade has sparked a demand for equal rights across the entire country. Your voice and your actions following this decision matter as you deserve to be included in the conversations that will mark the next era of our nation.
