“a major point is that we’re taking something that could be thrown away and making better use for it”- Owner, Randy Richers

Recycling’s main goal is always to make the best use of all materials, and only placing materials for which there is no more use for into the landfill. Organic material, glass, plastics, paper, metals, etc.. are examples of everyday products that can be recycled.

As individuals, we know that recycling is important to minimize the amount of waste going to a landfill. On a larger scale, major companies still use our natural resources just to be thrown away and not used again.

A local company that recognizes that issue is New York Crushing and Recycling. Located in Ulster New York, NY C&R is a company that takes used building materials from all around New York, crushes the product then sells it to be reused again. Owner of the company, Randy Richers stated that “overall the biggest thing is that it’s not being wasteful and it’s repurposing items so we don’t have to waste our natural resources”.

They crush products like concrete, brick, block, asphalt, rock, and dirt and then sell it back to be reused for contractors, homeowners, and New York’s DOT as well. Topsoil is also created at the site, leaves are taken in from the city of Kingston and are turning into compost which will then become topsoil.

Why is this so important? Well, recycling these products prevents unnecessary mining and it’s for a much cheaper cost. Also, any products containing harmful substances such as lead and asbestos are refused to be repurposed.
