The Season of Giving at RHS: Get involved!

The holiday season is the time for giving, and RHS is no exception. Many of our clubs are performing gracious acts of charity and are looking for your help. Clubs are trying to make it as easy as possible for students to participate in their charity.

One such club, National Honors Society, doesn’t go a month without organizing a drive or raising money for an honorable cause. This month their chosen charity is Astor Services for Children & Families’ “Adopt-a-Family” program.

Mrs. Bie, the advisor of NHS, does everything she can to encourage participation: email blasts, announcements, and flyers. Same goes for Regan Schweppe, the president of student council. She has gone all out in trying to get students to participate in the annual Claudio Cares Can Drive, which donates its proceeds to local food pantries.

In addition to NHS and Student Council, Environmental Club and Gender Equity Club are both planning fundraisers for charitable causes.

Need another reason to give this season? Giving makes us happy! Check out a study by Elizabeth Dunn at the University of British Columbia, whose results were published in the journal Science. In the experiment, researchers gauged participants’ initial happiness, gave them $20, and then asked half the participants to spend the money on themselves. The other half were asked to spend money on someone else. Guess who was happier? You guessed it! The charitable spenders were significantly happier than people who spent money on themselves.

So, you have no reason not to give and get happy. It’s easy! Take a moment to think about how you can spread the joy this holiday season by making a donation or taking some time to volunteer.
