“Pride and Prejudice” (1998 – Miniseries) Review
“It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife.” An opening line too easily recognized as Jane Austen’s classic, Pride and Prejudice. While there are multiple film adaptations of her novel, I want to focus on the best one, the 1998 version starring Jennifer Ehle and Colin Firth. The BBC mini-series features wonderful scenery, incredible costume design, and of course, the celebration of witty Miss Elizabeth Bennet. She is what all good female characters should be: intelligent, charismatic, well-read, and of course, she must possess the power to ever stupefy her male counterpart. Elizabeth Bennet holds love over lavish living, heart over hundreds, and justice over jewels. Throughout the series her incredible ability to rise to the challenge against any scrutiny and disprove the notion of a “proper” lady leaves the female audience in awe. Jennifer Ehle does an incredible job portraying Elizabeth’s character in an accurate parallel to the book, all with her own female-power spin.
