Eternals Review (2021)
As we celebrate Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month (May), it’s important to recognize new films that seek to include more diversity. Marvel’s Eternals, released in 2021, introduced a plethora of new heroes, as well as a cast that represented Asian American actors. As Asian actors have often been pushed out of fantasy roles, this movie sought to bring forth these characters into strong positions. Gemma Chan embodied a crucial role where she was not only strong, but feeling, leading with her heart rather than her fist. Other Asian actors like Don Lee contributed to the powerful cast, showing just how easy it is to build a diverse cast. Eternals opened the door for future leading roles, and with its unique tonality for a superhero movie, it was nothing short of special.
