“American Beauty” (1999) Review
Stuck in monotonous, suburban life, Lester Burnham (Kevin Spacey), faces a mid-life crisis. Emotionally detached from his daughter, Jane (Thora Birch), and lacking intimacy with his wife, Carolyn (Annette Bening), Lester finds himself infatuated over Jane’s best friend, Angela (Mena Suvari). As this film progresses, Lester begins to take control of his life, while, simultaneously, complicating it. This disturbingly intriguing film, American Beauty, winner of five Oscars and scoring 87% on Rotten Tomatoes, explores the complexity of people’s “boring” lives, and drives viewers to reflect on their own.
This film is superb.
