“10 Things I Hate About You” (1999) Review

10 Things I Hate About You is a 1999 romantic comedy film directed by Gil Junger. The cast features Julia Stiles as Kat Stratford, Heath Ledger as Patrick Verona, Larisa Olenik as Bianca Stratford, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Cameron James. In the film, Cameron (Gordon-Levitt) falls for Bianca (Larisa Olenik) but can’t take her out on a date unless her feminist, independent, “contraire” sister Kat (Julia Stiles) starts dating as well. Cameron schemes for Patrick (Heath Ledger), a boy with a dangerous reputation, to take Kat out in exchange for ample compensation.

This film did something that the film industry didn’t do often at the time: create a female lead with independence, hostility, and blunt honesty. Kat didn’t want to do things that people expected. She wasn’t interested in things like dating and prom. Kat’s personality scared away most boys in her school, except for Patrick.

Was Patrick persuasive enough? Will the plan work? Will Kat catch on? Watch to find out how this 9.5/10 film unfolds.
