As is well known, the Rhinebeck School District is represented by the hawk. This mascot was adopted in the 2004-2005 school year, when Rhinebeck middle and high school students voted to select a new mascot, replacing the former “Indians” moniker. Concerns that the Indians label could potentially be offensive towards people of Native American descent led Rhinebeck to mandate the removal of the school’s logo in 2001. However, these concerns are not entirely what led to the change. Students’ wishes to have a new school nickname that could be accompanied by a logo additionally prompted school officials to finally take action to replace it.
Out of over 200 student-submitted names, students were given four finalists to select from—Bobcats, Hawks, Ravens, and Rapids. By a decently sized margin, the Hawks ended up being the winning name, and Rhinebeck schools have been represented by the animal ever since.
But a question comes to mind: what else does a hawk symbolize and how does that connect with who we are as Rhinebeck Hawks?
Hawks are incredibly active and powerful birds of prey that hold a variety of different meanings across many cultures. Most notably, hawks are known for symbolizing courage, strength, and freedom. Hawks are also known for their intelligence. They have keen eyesight and problem-solving skills when it comes to hunting for prey, and they are resilient. They have the ability to adapt to various different environments.
While this is pretty cool information, the question of how it connects to who we are as Hawks still stands.
As previously mentioned, hawks are well known for their strength, determination, intelligence and courage, aligning them with the high standards and ambitions of our school environment. At Rhinebeck, students are expected to display perseverance, engage actively in learning, and possess critical thinking skills in order to make responsible decisions for the future.
Just as a hawk would apply these characteristics towards thriving as successful predators in their natural habitat, Rhinebeck students dedicate themselves towards succeeding in the academic setting and achieving their own personal goals.
