It wasn’t until recently Rhinebeck High School had both a Junior Varsity team and a Varsity Girls Basketball team. For the past three years, the girls’ teams can compete for a spot in sectionals in the post season along with the boys’ team. While the girls have yet to qualify for sectionals these past few years, they are hopeful for the ‘25-26 season.
Senior captain Macilyn Eighmy had this to say about the team: “To compete in sectionals this year, we need to unite as one team, trust one another and stay disciplined with communication, effort and holding each other accountable. As we keep our focus and play one unit games and in practice, we will be exactly where we need to be.”
The girls team this year has other goals to accomplish along with competing in sectionals. This is when Junior captain Ella Romeo steps in to lead her teammates. She had this to say on other goals for the season: “As a team this year we all have high expectations and hopes. Our main goals for this season are to grow not just skill wise, but as a family. We want to grow our team as a family and make our team chemistry thrive.”
With these goals in mind, skeptics might think that having a younger starting line up will hold the team back. With only three seniors to lead the seven juniors and four freshmen, this year could be a challenge. Both captains Macilyn Eighmy and Ella Romeo think the exact opposite. They both believe while they may differ from other teams with more seniors on the roster, having younger players step up and be fearless when it comes to varsity level competition is what will make their team even stronger compared to other teams. With this being said the girls varsity basketball team needs as much of your support that they can get, so make sure to make time this winter to stop by the Hawk Nest and support your lady hawks.
