The quiet streets of Rhinebeck have been buzzing lately, as unexpected sightings of world-famous musicians hint to something special happening just beyond the village. All eyes have been on the Jonas Brothers after they paid our favorite pizza place “Village Pizza” an unexpected visit. These snippets we hear and see aren’t as rare as we think and Rhinebeck is a place for many musicians to grow their work and experience, but this leaves us with one question: Where are these artists staying?
Just outside the village of Rhinebeck stands The Clubhouse–a residential recording studio with a new approach to recording music. Founded by Paul Antonell in 1986, The Clubhouse is rooted in rich musical history and was crucial to the development of many credible celebrities’ music we know and love. Antonell’s love letter to music provides a space for musicians to record and produce while straying away from the busy city life, trading crowded streets and tight schedules for space, quiet, and focus. Some artists who have used this space include; Shawn Mendes, Living Colour, The B-52’s, The National, Harry Styles, Fountains Of Wayne, Post Malone, Clairo and many more. The wide range of artists drawn to The Clubhouse, from indie musicians to global popstars speaks to its versatility and reputation as a space that adapts to the artist, not the other way around.
Paul Antonall, a musician of his own, has a love for making albums and wanted to create a space, safe for artists, producers, and engineers where their work would be easiest. When working with engineer and producer John Holbrook they wanted to give the people a brand new experience. Rhinebeck holds its reputation as a quiet, historical getaway with a lot to do and see, all while stillness is guaranteed. The intention behind creating this local recording studio was to provide an “old-timey” getaway including all the necessities for producing music. It offers a substantial amount of room in the live room– where the recording takes place, playing a key feature which draws musicians to The Clubhouse. With bedrooms, a full kitchen, living space, The Clubhouse doubles as a temporary home and a private residential recording studio with a uniquely complex built control room which is built on shock absorbers and was made with the intention of producing only the best sound. You’ll find everything you need and more including; amps, mics, iso booths, and keys. Unlike traditional studios that operate on tight schedules and sterile environments, the studio offers artists time, space, and quiet, allowing artists to unfold naturally. In point of fact, The Clubhouse is more than a recording studio, it serves as a creative retreat, where artists can enjoy a meaningful stay where they’re promised intention, and a perspective that can’t be replicated in a fast paced environment. In an industry that often prioritizes speed and efficiency, The Clubhouse highlights sound, stillness, and the artist’s creative process drawing more celebrities to roam the streets of our town, Rhinebeck.
