Tik Tok: The Pros and Cons

Overtime sports section.

Trending dances.

Teen parents and several other topics.

Are these reasons to watch Tik Tok? Or turn it off?

Rhinebeck Reality asked a few questions about Tik Tok to a group of students: Logan Dykeman Parker Dutton, Otto Schweppe, Felix Adams

The Pros

  • It’s funny
  • It’s sharable with your friends.
  • It puts you in a good mood.
  • You can express yourself.
  • People like to dance.
  • You can relate to someone if you’re doing the same dance.
  • It’s entertaining.

“I mainly use it when I’m bored,” said Rena Burkhart

The Cons

“I don’t think it should be taken down, but I’m not interested in using it,” said Otto Schweppe.  “The cons outweigh the pros,” according to Schweppe.

  • It’s too fast — if you don’t like someone, you just swipe up.
  • Anyone can see you, so you don’t have that much privacy.
  • It objectifies women — if there’s a woman who is dancing very provocatively, she will become famous and more people will do that.
  • You’re more likely to become tik tok famous if you’re “pretty,” skinny, every facial expression you make is attractive, young
  • There’s some bullying on tik tok (duet videos)
  • There’s a lot of copying without citation
  • It’s completely managed by foreign companies — there’s probably data sharing going on.
  • It probably shortens attention span
  • There are more productive things to be doing

Even though Tik Tok has its pros and cons, it can benefit people in their own way.
