Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon (2000) is a film created in China; the film follows two fictional martial arts fighters, Yu Shu Lien and Master Li Mu Bai, along with a young girl, Jen Yu, who later becomes the main character. It is set in an ancient, mystical China although it is undisclosed when. The film explores the idea that women should not be controlled by society’s expectations, and it shows this idea by a girl escaping her marriage to a rich prince, running away, and learning martial arts through the help of a master instructor. Overall, this film is a great watch which is evident by the four academy awards it won. Although the film is in Chinese, it is not hard to understand what is happening and the subtitles don’t bring your attention away from the action. The addition of the ability of flight also separates this ancient world from the real world. The film is packed with action and battles that are very entertaining. In addition, the main actors have since turned from stars in China to stars worldwide. I would recommend this film to audiences 15+ and I would give this film an 8/10.
