The Bekfest Club: RBK’s Most Passionate Gym Team

To most of you I am a writer for Rhinebeck Reality. But 2nd period of every A/C day in the gym, I’m known as Coach Crumby. I know what you’re thinking; it’s weird. But to my 6 other teammates it’s normal. Crumby, Eggy, Poached, Toasty, English Muffin, Crispy and Sharp Cheddar. We are the Bekfest Club. Our little posse formed as most gym class gangs do; through the picking of teams.

I was convinced by others to volunteer as a coach for our first unit Ultimate Frisbee. I picked the team not knowing what would come out of it. I didn’t even know some of my teammates before. But instantly we clicked and began to develop our little club. I had the idea that we would have nicknames and for some reason we came on breakfast food. We all slowly came up with ideas for names, each funnier than the last. But we don’t just have fun names, we are also really good at gym. Like really good.

We have pretty much dominated each sport Mr. Jutton has thrown at us, always being the 1st or 2nd best team. We are even the champions of the 2nd period Roller Hockey tournament. I decided to interview my team and Mr. Jutton to show how beneficial picking teams can really be. “A big part of setting the atmosphere here is allowing coaches to draft teams” Mr. Jutton told me. Picking teams really allows students to develop leadership skills and also creates the opportunity for students who don’t know each other to intermingle. Choosing teams at random also decreases the problem of favoritism and bullying.

Aylssa Barbados (Poached) said, “Being able to choose teams in gym does make it more enjoyable”

Gym class can sometimes be considered a “burden” or a “waste of time” to some students, but allowing us to pick teams and play with our friends creates a fun environment for everyone.

Mikaela Torcello (Crispy) described the team saying, “Our team is great because we have a good bond. We help other teammates and cheer them on. We’re competitive but we also joke around and have fun.”

As you can see, gym class can become a very rewarding part of your day if you can find people to bond with and having a unique shared experience.

As for Bekfest club?

Simply put by Ainsley Dutton (Eggy), “We are the best team in the history of Rhinebeck gym groups.”
