February 13th, Galentine’s Day- welcome to the best made up holiday on the calendar.
Galentine’s Day is beloved by many and a welcoming day to all. If you’re not quite sure what Galentine’s Day is all about, it’s a nonofficial holiday for “ladies celebrating ladies,’’ according to founder Leslie Knope from Parks and Recreation.
While Valentine’s Day is centered on romantic relationships, and is a day that can leave many feeling stressed, lonely, and sad, Galentine’s day is the opposite! Everyone is welcome to celebrate and to support all the wonderful, kind, powerful women in our lives.
Leslie Knope, beloved fictional character in Parks and Rec. invented this holiday in a 2010 episode to celebrate her own female friends.
As Leslie describes, Galentine’s is a day where “Every February 13, my lady friends and I leave our husbands and our boyfriends at home, and we just come and kick it, breakfast-style. Ladies celebrating ladies.”
Although Galentine’s Day isn’t a national holiday, it is still recognized and adored by many. And according to the lingerie brand Boux Avenue, searches for Galentine’s Day have increased by 400% since 2015, whereas Valentine’s Day searches have decreased by 55%.
Your Galentine’s celebration can be a place for everyone. It can include women, men, transgender and non-binary friends or really anyone you consider a cherished friend.
Galentines will forever be a place to appreciate all the fantastic and courageous people in our lives!
This year remember to celebrate the Leslie way~ with waffles, whipped cream and a heaping amount of admiration for your female friends!
