Don’t we all long to know what our pets have to say?

We are so curious about whether they need to go to the bathroom, or if they like their new collar that we bought. Imagine all the things you could do and all the places you could go, if you could talk to animals.

The movie Doctor Dolittle explores the concept of being able to talk to animals and what they have to say.  

Doctor Dolittle first came out in 1967 and the movie has come out five more times after that. This movie concept is timeless, since the movie has been remade countless times. The latest Dolittle remake came out this year. After seeing the movie, I turned to my sister and we both expressed how much we liked it.

Doctor Dolittle is about a doctor who can talk to animals. He lives with his wife and the animals that he has rescued through the years. His house is not only full of animals, but also treasures from his past adventures.

 In the movie, a young boy comes along and completely changes Dolittle’s life. The young boy comes to Dolittle with a hurt squirrel that he wants him to save. Dolittle doesn’t want to help the boy, but he ends up as the catalyst for the adventure.

The voice actors for Dolittle’s various animals included names like Tom Holland, Selena Gomez, and John Cena. As a huge fan of Spiderman and everything in the Marvel universe, I mainly wanted to see Tom Holland, who plays Spiderman, star as Jip the dog. I was disappointed when the dog character wasn’t a huge part of the movie.  But this didn’t affect my view on the movie as a whole.

The only thing that I thought needed work was Robert Downey Jr’s accent. Downey played the main role, Doctor Dolittle, and had a fake Welsh accent that my whole family didn’t particularly like. 

The original Dolittle movie from 1967 had a British main character: Rex Harrison. Obviously, there was no accent problem with Rex Harrison. The new 2020 Dolittle can’t say that they got their accent right. 

Robert Downey Jr’s accent was like that of Lin Manuel Miranda’s pathetic British accent in Mary Poppins Returns. In the first Mary Poppins in the 60s, Dick Van Dyke failed infamously at recreating British accent. 

Movies that need a British accent should just hire a British actor for their main character instead of completely butchering the accent and risking ruining the entire movie.

Overall, I was able to overlook the accent problem during the movie. While I would not buy Dolittle on DVD or see it again, I did enjoy watching it for the first time.
