“The Farewell” (2019) Review
In The Farewell (2019), directed by Lulu Wang, a Chinese family returns to China under the false pretense of a wedding in order to say goodbye to their dying grandmother. Billi’s (Awkwafina) family decides not to tell Nai Nai (Zhao Shu- zhen) that she has stage four lung cancer. With emotional performances and beautiful cinematography, this film perfectly depicts the aching feeling of grief and sadness. All the relatives are forced to pretend nothing is wrong, and act as if the reunion was truly in light of a wedding. This kind of situation is something that American culture does not believe in, making it very intriguing and raw for viewers.
I would recommend this film to anyone who enjoys other A24 productions. Overall I would rate it an 8/10.
