“Little Women” (2019) Review
Greta Gerwig’s 2019 adaptation of Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women is a story of sisterhood and the power of womanhood. The movie follows a determined young writer, Jo March, and her three sisters, Amy, Beth, and Meg. The relationships between sisters and their mother, Marmee, teach us the lessons of empowering our fellow women. The dynamic between Jo (Soairse Ronan) and Laurie (Timothee Chalamet) gives us a look into the feminism that still existed even back then. Jo’s progression as a writer and unwavering determination is an inspirational look into the struggles and successes of being a woman in a male dominated profession. Little Women is not only a beautiful movie in message, but chilling stylistically, musically, and with its transitions back and forth from childhood to adulthood. This classic story is one that can be watched and admired by any age, and will remain timeless even as we progress as an originally strictly-binary society.
I would give Little Women an honest 10/10, as it dissects sisterhood, feminism, and womanhood in a way that many movies of this sort often fail to do.
