“Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro” (1979) Review
Hayao Miyazaki is, of course, a huge name in the Japanese animation industry; almost every single one of his films is absolutely unforgettable, from Kiki’s Delivery Service to My Neighbor Totoro, and Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro is no exception. This fun action-adventure follows Lupin, “the wolf,” a master con artist and thief, his right hand man, Jigen, and the other elements of Lupin’s grand plan such as Goemon and Fujiko. What starts off as a revenge mission after finding out that money he’d stolen was counterfeit produced in the castle of Cagliostro, turns into an epic journey to save the princess, Clarisse. The old-school animation style, fantastically 70s/80s Japanese soundtrack with hits like “Fire Treasure,” and charming, morally gray main characters are really what make this movie such a treat. Having been released in 1979, there are a few moments that make you roll your eyes, but overall this film is a treasure.
