While 1984’s Footloose feels like a dramatized set of events, it happens to be based in some truth. The story, starring Kevin Bacon, is inspired by an incident in Elmore City, Oklahoma. The town had outlawed dancing in hopes of decreasing alcohol consumption within the city. The teens of the real life Footloose challenged the no-dance rule as they wanted a senior prom. The dispute ended in a vote by the school board, the tie-breaking member shouting, “Let ‘em dance.”

The film Footloose encapsulates everything good about 80s cinema; risky thematics, cheesy romance, all while flashy music pushes the scenes forward. It’s bad in all the best ways, and if you’re looking for that 80s spunk, Footloose is for you.
