Killer Klowns from Outer Space (1988), directed by Stephen Chiodo, tells the story of a mysterious asteroid that falls to Earth and the clown-like aliens it brings with it. Teenagers Mike and Debbie set out to investigate the strange beings that have entered their town, but with no help from the police they’re almost out of luck. Officer Dave Hannon offers to lend a hand, and together the three have several close calls with the Klowns, who want to cocoon them in cotton candy and save them in food storage.
The most striking aspects of Killer Klowns from Outer Space are the costumes and the Klowns arsenal of weaponry. The Klowns are huge, grotesque, hunks of latex contained in shiny jumpsuits; which is what makes them so creepy. They take a fear of clowns to the next level with their sagging faces, spiky hair, and creative makeup.
Killer Klowns from Outer Space is painfully 80’s in the best way possible, and makes for a super entertaining movie night. The film doesn’t take itself too seriously, and neither should the viewer. If you’re looking for hardcore scares, this is not the film for you, but if you want a not-so-scary horror movie (granted you’re not afraid of clowns) this is the perfect choice. I would rate this movie a 7/10, for the visual aspects of the Klowns, like their costumes and their extra-terrestrial circus tent.
